Acetone reacts with CHCl3 in presence of KOH to form a sleep inducing drug . What is the name of drug and what is the mechanism of the reaction ?

The base pulls off the acidic proton of the chloroform, making it a strong nucleophile. That attacks the electrophilic carbon of the ketone. The oxygen becomes negatively charged and then picks up a proton in the workup.
