Hi Alexis,

 

Draw the triangle in the xy coordinate plane. You will see that the line segment dropped from (3,4) perpendicular to the x-axis is the altitude of the triangle (length is 4). The base is the segment from (1,0) to (8,0) which has a length of 7.

 

Area of a triangle is 1/2 bh.
