There's really not enough information here to give you a great answer. If you go back far enough- before 600 BC- there really was no money in Greek culture.
So, you'll need to take another look at the book you're using. Make sure you're reading the correct section or chapter. Then, as you read, look for how money was used. Was it used to pay people for their work? Was it used to buy things- instead of bartering? Were coins used to promote kings? I expect you'll see what your book is trying to say as you read it again with those questions in mind.
