What is the weight in ounces if a box of books is 8 times heavier than a box of apples and the total weight of both boxes is 104 pounds?

Use this conversion factor:
 
1 pound = 16 ounces
 
 
104 pounds = 1664 ounces
 
 
Now we define variables for the weight of box of books and weight of box of apples.
 
Let the weight of box of apples = x
Let the weight of box of books = 8x
 
Using these variables, we can write an equation to represent the total weight.
 
x + 8x = 1664
 
 
Solve the equation for x.

The problem is not finished in it's statement.
It appears to be asking for the total weight in ounces
which, as Michael J said, is 1664 ounces.
 
However, I think you meant to ask how many
ounces is a box of books, and how many ounces
is a box of apples...
 
9x = 1664
 
x = 184.89 ounces per box of apples
 
8x = 1479.12 ounces per box of books
