anthony bought an 8 foot board. He cut off 3/4 of the board to build a shelf, and gave 1/3 of the rest to his brother for an art project. How many inches long was the piece anthony gave his brother?

The original board is 8 ft = 8 * 12 in = 96 inches

 

After he builds a shelf with 3/4 of it, there is 1/4 left:

 

96in * 1/4 = 24in left over

 

He gives 1/3 of the left overs to his brother for the art project:

 

24 in * 1/3 = 8 in that he gives his brother.

We can also find how many feet the brother got, then convert to inches.

 

 

If he cut off 3/4 of the board, then he cut off a length of

 

8(3/4) = 3 * 2 = 6

 

 

He cut off 6 ft of the board for shelf buidling.

 

What he has left now is

 

8 - 6 = 2

 

2 ft is left.

 

 

 

Giving 1/3 of the rest to his brother.  That is

 

2(1/3) = 2/3

 

 

Anthony gave his brother 2/3 feet of board.

 

 

Convert this to inches.  Multiply this value by 12.

 

(2 / 3) * 12 =

 

2 * 4 = 8

 

 

Anthony's brother got 8 inches.
