A passenger plane made a trip to Las Vegas and back. On the trip there it flew 432 mph and on the return trip it went 480 mph. How long did the trip there take if the return was nine hours?

     Do a quick drawing showing the plane's flight to and from Las Vegas, and label the information:

             480 mi/h

Then make a table:

 

                      rate         *          time    =                Distance

 

     Plane

(longer flight)   432 mi/h   *       t        =     432t= 4320 mi

 

 

(shorter flight)  480 mi/h     *    9 hours   = 480 (9)=4320 mi            

 

 

432t=4,320                Just solve for "t," and you have your answer.
