Lets see. We start from 30 and end up with 8. Since this is money problem, the situation I can think of is paying off your debts. When you are in debt, if have to pay a certain amount. When you pay off that debt (giving more money to the debt collectors), that amount you owe decreases. Credit cards are associated with debt, and you are charged a fee each time you pay it late.
Let x = the fee
30 + 5x = 8
5x = -22
x = 4.4
What this means is that if you have a debt of $30, and you pay the debt collectors $22 in late payments, then you only owe $8 the next time you pay it off.
