Why does the +5 in this equation 4(2p -1) - (p+5)change to -5.

Hi,

Why does the +5 in this equation 4(2p -1) - (p+5)change to -5. There is nothing out side the second parentheses for multiplying.

I got the answer wrong I got 7p + 1.

I checked this and it is wrong the answer should be 7p - 9

I don't understand why the + changes to a - in front of the five. If the equation was
 4(2p -1) - 1(p+5) I would of got 7p-9

I'm confused
Thanks

Alex S.

It's not an equation unless there is an "=".

What do you mean the +5 changes? Is the expression:
4(2p -1) - (p+5)

You say you would have gotten this answer, but here's how that simplifies to 7p - 9:

Distribute:

(4*2p - 4) - p - 5

Group like terms

= 8p - p - 4 - 5

Combine like terms

= 7p - 9.
