we get $.05 per flyer, so the amount of money earned by

We also get $20 for the day above the .05x so we earn

.05x + 20 dollars each day.

 

We wish this to be at least $65 so we want our daily total to be 

greater than or equal to 65.

 

Thus we have

 

.05x + 20 ≥ 65

The first thing we need to do is understand that x≥y means x is greater than or equal to y, while x≤y means x is less than or equal to y. So right from the start without doing any calculations we know that it can't be A, because it says that George's earnings are less than or equal to 65, and we know he wants greater than or equal to $65.

 

Secondly, we know that both monetary values need to be in the same units. So we're either going to put them both in cents (unreasonable to measure $20 in cents) or both in dollars (much more reasonable to measure 5¢ in dollars). 5¢ in dollars is $0.05, just like the problem states. Answers B and D both say 5x which seems to indicate that George earns $5 per flier, which we know is not the case. So we know it can't be either of them, either.

 

So the answer must be C.
