two trains started a journey at thesame time from two places 300km apart.they travelled towards each other,one train travelling twice as fast as the other. they met 11/2hours after they started. find the speeds of the trains?

the trains are 300 km apart

one train is twice as fast as the other (so it will travel twice as far)

the fast train travels 200 km and the slow train travels 100 km

distance=rate*time

100=r(3/2)  (1 1/2=3/2)

100(2/3)=r

r=200/3=66 2/3 kph

2r=133 1/3 kph

Let the speed of 1 train be x km/h, speed of second train = 2x km/hr

 

Since they are travelling towards each other, the relative speed is x + 2x = 3x km/hr

 

They meet after 11/2 hrs so distance traveled = speed*time = (33/2)x km

 

This distance is 300 km

 

300 = 33*x/2

x = 600/33

= 100/11 

 

Speed of first train is 100/11 km/hr and that of second train is 200/11 km/hr
