Let's start with what we know and label out variables:
let c = cupcakes and m = muffins
48 = c + m
c = 2m (since they sold twice as many c than m)
Now that we have a value we can put that into our equation:
48 = 2m + m
48 = 3m
Divide both sides by 3:
16 = m
Now that we have m, we can solve for c:
c = 2 * 16
c = 32
Now to check our answer:
48 = 32 +16
48 = 48
So the bakery sold 32 cupcakes, and 16 muffins.
