How many layers should a newborn wear in winter?

Hey all. As we all know once we bring a baby home from the hospital, it’s easy to second guess yourself on even the simplest tasks—including how to dress a newborn! Are they too hot? Too cold? Just right?! So, I want to know when the temperatures drop, how many layers of kidswear should a newborn wear in winter to keep them warm and cozy?

The general rule is to dress the newborn in similar layers as you would yourself. So an appropriate clothing option for a newborn in winter (assuming it's 32F or below) would be a long sleeved top and pants or long pajama outfit, socks or footies, and hat. The baby's body can always be covered with a blanket while in a carseat. Children should never wear coats or be wrapped in blankets under carseat straps, as this causes the straps to not tighten enough. If the child is out of the carseat, a coat and mittens are appropriate.
