So a sales tax is added on after the fact, so you are already paying 100% of the cost PLUS 8.25% tax, so it gets added together and you have to pay 108.25% of the shown cost. With that a percentage is the same as sliding the decimal point over two places, so 1% = 0.01, 10% = 0.10, 100% = 1.00, 108.25% = 1.0825 so multiplying the cost by how much percentage we are actually paying we get: $543.99*108.25% = 588.869175 which rounds to $588.87.
