I agree counseling is a major component of social work practice. As a social work practitioner, what is hoping to be accomplished is by leaning a little bit more into counseling you're trying to build an alliance and trying to help isolate the issues that an individual or family system may be navigating at the time. Just like most things in a social worker's arsenal and tools, counseling is one of those things that we are able to do to assist someone with viewing, processing, and creating solutions or preventative strategies.
Even when we describe what type of counseling that we might do with an individual or a family system, there are so many different approaches as to what might work best for our clients. Social workers might specialize in different variations of counseling/therapy it is always best to make sure that our skill sets properly align with the individual needs of our clients.
