Passage of the bar exam and Model Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) generally satisfies the requirement for minimum competence, which means you are fully licensed as an attorney. No further requirements exist, although most states require all attorneys to continue to do some studying on a regular basis throughout their careers (Continuing Legal Education, or CLE). Additionally, just because you get a license to practice law upon successfully completing the bar exam doesn't necessarily mean that you actually know the practical side of law practice. Most new attorneys find that they have a lot of real-world stuff to learn about law practice during their first few years as attorneys even though no formal internship is legally required.
Do I have to do a one-year legal internship, after I've passed New York Bar Exam, in order to be admitted to the NY Bar as an attorney at law?
