According to the World Health Organization “The reported case fatality rate (CFR) is defined as the proportion of reported cases of a specified disease or condition which are fatal within a specified time”.
Since the use and meaning of proportions is different in epidemiology compared to other sciences (chemistry or math, for example), this definition may be not straightforward to put in formula. In other words, CFR is the number disease associated deaths divided by total number of all reported cases of disease and multiplied by 100. It is expressed as %.
For example:
In 2017, 13,681 and 159 of cases cholera and cholera-associated deaths were reported in Haiti. Thus, the reported CFR was 1.2%.
Calculations: CFR=(159/13,681)*100=1.2%
