Use Apple's Time Machine app, which will be on your Mac. Connect the hard drive and Time Machine will pretty much walk you through the process, it's very easy, basically tell it what to backup and where to backup to. Here's the how-to page for step-by-step instructions with screen shots: https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT201250
Have fun :)

I recommend a disk-cloning utility called SuperDuper. Install the software and it'll walk you through the process step by step. I use it every couple of weeks to back up the system drive in my MacMini, and every month or so to back up my work storage archive drive (I run two drives in my MacMini, using a DiskDoubler bracket from OWC computing). SuperDuper is available for free, but the paid version also lets you schedule and automate backups. After you set it up — again, it'll walk you through it step by step — it'll work in the background and you'll never have to deal with it again. Unless, of course, something bad happens. Then you'll be GLAD that you can deal with it.07/16/19
