w²+2w-80=0

factor

(w+10)(w-8)=0

Depth = 3 inch

L x W X D = 240

Substituting for L and Depth

 

(W+2) x W x 3 = 240

3W^2 + 6W = 240

w^2 + 2W -80= 0

w^2 + 10 W -8W -80 = 0

w(W+10)-8 (w+10) = 0

(w-8)(W+10) = 0

W = 8

 

The width is 8 inches.
