How do I recover documents on a Mac?

The answer to your question depends on the document.

If it is an earlier version of a document that still exists you must open the document and click on the File menu then choose Versions from the menu.

if the document is missing all together then you can use Time Machine to recover the document - this only works if you had Time Machine turned on prior to loosing the document. if the document is on iCloud you can recover it by signing in to icloud.com with the same Apple ID you use on your Mac and click on Setting>>Restore files.
