As of yet, NO future medical coders do not need to have a nursing/ clinical background;
however, it does help boost one's understanding of how the codes work being that
their clinical skills combined with Medical terminology, and Anatomy and Physiology
can help them become a much stronger Coder. I personally have a medical assisting
background, so it has helped me tremendously whenever I got stuck on coding a
procedure or diagnosis.
