Mario's music is really amazing. Something to consider when writing your own video game music is...
You're never going to make something like the Mario theme song.
But that's ok! You have other great melodies in your head, and that's what is going to hook people. Here's my take on the Mario hook.
1) a super fast intro that instantly hooks you into the vibe of the song
2) The melody, which ever melody best fits the mood
3) "B section", usually much shorter than the A section, which reverts quickly back to the original theme. Then loop it!
