No, a certificate is not required for medical coding. However, finding a position without a certificate is going to be difficult because, most places require a certificate. You can see a listing of different available certificates from AAPC at https://www.aapc.com/certification/medical-coding-certification.aspx.
I would recommend persuing a coding certificate. You would be more prepared for your workplace and you would definitely earn more money as a coder with a certificate.
