Modifier XS

Separate Structure: A service that is distinct because it was performed on a separate organ/structure.

According to information published by Capture Billing, Medical Billing Services, Modifier XS may be reported instead of Modifier 59.

CMS (The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) is encouraging providers to report Modifier XS when appropriate in order to avoid overuse of Modifier 59.

Here is a scenario:

1. Injection into tendon sheath, elbow (20550) and injection into tendon sheath, knee (20550-XS).
2. Separate structure or organ,
3. Different anatomical site.
4. .Same encounter.
