Security Engineers - What Do They Do?

I'm starting my MS in Computer Science (I hold a BS currently) soon and I'm considering specializing in cyber security. I'll be taking courses such as cryptography, biometrics, network security, computer architecture, and information and security among other things. I've been looking around at what jobs would be available to me and security engineer seems like something I would be interested in. What kind of tasks does this job entail? Is this more of a networking field or can I get my hands on some programming and software engineering in here?

I am an IT project manager. I always have IT Security team members that come and go on the project. Think of most departments in a large IT organization as verticals (silos). You might have a networking group, an SAP group, a desktop / computing group, application development group(s), perhaps specialization groups such as GeoSpatial and one or more end-user support / help-desk groups. These silos will interact from time to time -- but IT Security is a horizontal -- whereby virtually every silo will depend on IT Security for one thing or another. You could be involved in white-hat hacking, auditing, configuring routers, writing firewall rules, investigating suspicious network activity or system alerts, performing patches and upgrades, reviewing engineering plans for IT Security risks, recommending mitigation strategies and so on. So, to answer your question, to be called on for any of these responsibilities you will need experience and credentials that relate. As a supplement to your degree, I strongly suggest setting your sights on certifications in routing, firewalls, networking, Linux and Windows internals, and web-centric programming. Also keep abreast of emerging trends in all of the above. Subscribe to magazines and blogs, and attend conferences. In addition to the technical knowledge, make sure you get good at interpersonal skills (soft skills) and people-networking. Sharp technical people with strong interpersonal skills are in high demand.
