Hello there, in CPT, an endoscopy "family" is built around a base code that describes the simplest, diagnostic scope. For example, colonoscopy 45378 is the base for other colonoscopy codes like 45380 for biopsy. All of the other codes in that family include the work of the base code plus an added service like biopsy, polypectomy, control of bleeding, etc. When multiple procedures in the same family are done at the same session, you generally report only the most comprehensive code from that family, not the base code separately. In your CPT book, you’ll find the family and its base code by reading the section notes and the parenthetical instructions directly under the codes.
Hope that was helpful!
