One of the greatest aspects of the field of social work is how versatile it is. There are many specialties and sub specialties in social work. Some schools even focus on certain specialties. Examples of specialties in social work are: school social work (most states you need a separate credential and license to be able to practice), addiction (also need extra schooling and licensing to practice this specialty in most states), mental health, leadership/administration, community organizing, gerontology, LGBTQ, etc. One specific example of a sub specialty would be within the field of gerontology, you could be a social worker that works specifically in hospice. There are many different places a social worker can practice and with many different populations. In schools of social work, the most common concentrations are addiction, school, mental health, health, and administration.
