Can someone explain the rhythm of a Mazurka?

While perusing some Chopin and Liszt sheets, I tried to play a Mazurka or two. But, I simply don't understand how the rhythm works. It feels awkward and unbalanced when I try and I just don't *get it*, you know? Would someone kindly breakdown how a Mazurka makes sense rhythmically?

Mazurkas are essentially Polish dances felt in a triple meter, kind of like a fast waltz. Accents are placed on the second and third beats. I think the reason that they would feel unbalanced is because the emphasis is not placed on the first beat. I think from a performance standpoint, it is important to know where the first beats are in order to feel the groupings, however, it is important to know that the phrasing emphasizes the second two beats.
