How do I prove mod X is equal to mod of minus X?

Suppose N mod x = r.

Then there is a quotient Q such that Qx + r = N

But

(-Q)(-x) + r = N

so N mod (-x) has quotient (-Q) with remainder r, which is the same remainder

Therefore N mod (-x) = r which concludes the proof
