a vegetable bin built in the form of a cube with an edge of 6 ft. is divided by a vertical partition which passes through two diagonally opposite edges.Find the lateral surface of either compartment.

The area of the partition is  6 x the length of a diagonal,  so =  6  √2  6 =  36 √2

Two of the original sides are divided into two parts, so each one of these has area =  36 / 2  =  18

Two of the original sides are part of a compartment,  each one of these has area  = 36

 

So the total lateral area of a compartment is

 

36 √2 + 18 + 18 + 36 + 36  =  108 + 36 √2
