Four numbers are such that the second number is twice the first number, the third number is 10 less than the second number and the fourth number is a quarter of the third number. Find the value of each of these numbers if their sum is 125.

Let x = the first number

Let 2x = the second number

Let 2x - 10 = the third number

Let (1/4)(2x - 10) = the fourth number

 

x + 2x + 2x - 10 + (1/4)(2x - 10) = 125

5x - 10 + (1/2)x - 5/2 = 125

(11/2)x - 12 1/2 = 125

(11/2)x = 137 1/2 = 275/2

Multiply both sides by 2/11.

x = 25

2x = 50

2x - 10 = 40

(1/4)(2x - 10) = 10
