Let x = the length and x-4 = the width:
Area = (length)(width)
96 = x(x-4)
96 = x2 - 4x
0 = x2 - 4x - 96
0 = (x-12)(x+8)
x = 12 and -8. Since you can't have a negative length, x = 12.
Perimeter = 2(length) + 2(width)
Perimeter = 2x + 2(x-4)
Perimeter = 2(12) + 2(12-4)
Perimeter = 40
