How can I freeze specific rows in Excel?

Simple shortcut:

 

Choose where you want the cells to Freeze:

On the keyboard push ALT W F F (in that order, you don't need to hold any buttons, just push alt w f f), that's a shortcut for freeze panes.

 

It will freeze everything ABOVE and LEFT of the cell you selected.

Using the Freeze Panes feature located on the View menu tab.

 

You can freeze either the first row or the first column.

You also have the capability to freeze multiple rows and or multiple columns, but you can not freeze a row or column in the middle of the spreadsheet.  The frozen rows & columns are all linked back to the first row or column.

You can use "Freeze Panes" on the View menu. This will by default give you options of freezing the first row or the first column.

 

If you want to free a different number of rows or columns, you can place your cursor at a location just below and to the right of the cells that you want frozen. For example, say you want to freeze the first two columns and the first 5 rows. Click on cell C6 (which has two columns to the left of it, and five rows above it). Then View menu --> Freeze Panes, and voilà those rows and columns will be frozen.
