adding mixed fractions question

The mixed fraction 2 1/2 + 4 2/3 = 6 7/6 simplify to 7 1/6. If you add just the mixed numbers 2+4 = 6 how did they get 7 1/6? ---- 7/6 simplify to 1/6 but confused how the mixed number 7 is there instead of 6 1/6?

When you did...

6 + 3/6 + 4/6 did you take the big 4 from the large fraction 4 2/3 and that is the rule to add fractions?

2+4 = 6 1/2 x 2/3 = 3/6 then you added a 4/6. Where did the 4 come from if we used 3/6 + 4/6 = 6/6

To add or subtract fractions, you need to put them over a common denominator.  That means converting them into equivalent fractions.  The common denominator for 1/2 and 2/3 is 6, so I need to convert 1/2 to an equivalent fraction over 6 and 2/3 into an equivalent fraction over 6.  To convert 2/3 to an equivalent fraction over 6, I multiply it by 2/2.  Remember that 2/2=1, so I'm not changing the value of the fraction:

(2/3)(2/2) = 4/6   and (1/2)(3/3) = 3/6

Now I can add them:

4/6 + 3/6 = 7/6 = 1 1/6
