to   3y + 5 = 14  therefore y = ?

 

(3 x y) + 5 = 14

Subtract 5 from both sides of the equation:

 

3y + 5 - 5 = 14 - 5

 

3y = 9

 

Divide both sides of the equation by 3:

 

3y/3 = 9/3

 

y = 3

 

Checking the answer:

 

3y + 5 = 14

3(3) + 5 = 14

9 + 5 = 14

14 = 14

 

and we're done!
