I like Sung's answer and approach but wanted to show you another way to make sure you know why you got stuck on the question.
you have x - .12x = 88
the key here is that the first x has a coefficient of 1. Sometimes people don't even write the 1 since 1 is an identity. In this case it'll help you:
1x - .12x = 88
Now you can combine like terms.
.88x = 88
divide both sides by .88
x = 100
If you want to check your answer:
Look at the original problem.
For x - .12x = 88 let's plug in our answer and see:
100 - .12(100) = 88
100 - 12 = 88
88 = 88, so this checks out!

If you multiply 100 for each side, you will get
100x - 12x = 8800
now, subtraction 12x from 100x will give 88x.
88x = 8800
Each side has to divided by 88 will give
x = 100.
