Granola costs $6.50 per pound. Assorted nuts cost $9 per pound. How many pounds of granola and nuts are needed to make 7 pounds of trail mix that costs $8 per pound?

 

Answer 1

g + n = 7 --------> g = 7 - n

6.5g + 9n = 7(8)

 

Substitute!

 

6.5(7 - n) + 9n = 56

45.5 - 6.5n + 9n = 56

2.5n = 10.5

n = 4.2

 

g = 7 - 4.2

g = 2.8

 

2.8 lbs of granola and 4.2 lbs of nuts are needed.
