The salt water fish prefers water with a salt content significantly greater than normal tap water, or normal fresh water aquarium water. When the salt water fish is exposed to fresh water (no or little salt), water will enter the cells of the fish via osmosis (movement of water from high water concentration to low water concentration; or from low salt concentration to high salt concentration). This will ultimately result in the rupture of the cells (lysis) and death of the organism.
