Use of the Verb Ser

Question

My son is taking Spanish and we have ten phrases that must be translated using the verb ser:

1. I am young
2. The boys are funny
3. Shaq and Hakeem are tall
4. Tony Hawk and I are daring
5. You (s/fam) are ugly
6. You (masc) and Calista are thin
7. Patricia and Maria are pretty
8. They (fem) are brunettes
9.Janet is nice
10. We are short

5. Tú eres feo.
6. Calista y tú sois delgados.
7. Patricia y María son bonitas.

9. Janet es amable.
10. Somos bajos.

This requires knowledge of the present tense conjugations of the verb "ser."

 

Perhaps these conjugations could be found in your son's textbook, if he has one. If not:

 

I: soy

You (singular/familiar): eres

Third person singular or You (formal): es

We: somos

They: son

 

And some schools teach this conjugation as well:

You (plural, used in Spain): sois

 

And something else to keep in mind with this assignment is that in Spanish, the adjectives reflect the gender and plurality of the noun, which is not the case in English.

 

ex: 

blue boy --> niño azul

blue boys -- niños azules

pink girl --> niña rosa

pink girls --> niñas rosas

 

Note how the adjective is the same in English whether it's one child or two children but is different in Spanish.
