To pass a class, a student must have a total score of 70 or better on a 0 to 100 grading scale. If the student has a homework average of 77 and scores of 68, 65, 52, and 82 on the first four exams, what minimum score must the student earn on the final exam to pass the class? Assume that homework is worth 12%, each regular exam is worth 13%, and the final exam is worth 36% of the grade.

The question is slightly misworded because it will require an INEQUALITY, not just an equation.

 

0.12(homework) + 4•0.13(sum of tests so far) + 0.36(final exam score) ≥ 70 

 

Note that the sum of all coefficients of parenthesized components equals 1.0

 

Substitute homework=77 and sum of tests so far, and solve for final exam score (the minimum).
