in 2001, the population in a town was 8 % more than it was in 2000, If the population was 24,190 in 2002, which was 10% more than 2001, find the population in 2000.

P = population in 2000 = ?

 

1.08P = population in 2001  [i.e. 8% higher that the 2000 level]

 

(1.10) [(1.08)P] = population in 2002 [i.e. 10% higher than the 2001 level] = 24190

 

(1.10)(1.08)P = 24190

 

P = 24190 / [(1.10)(1.08)] ≅ 20362
