I agree with Arturo. If your teacher is instructing you to only write the verb, then it is miraba which is the imperfect tense. The imperfect tense often translates to "used to" do something, as opposed to the preterit, which is used for simple, completed actions (e.g. Ayer miré la televisión después de cenar. Yesterday I watched TV after dinner).

I suggest "Antes yo miraba a ..."

 

This translates into English literally as "Before, I looked at ..." which is roughly equivalent to "I used to look at ..."
