John has $38 and Sam has $20. If John gives some money to Sam, John will then have one-third of what Sam has. How much does John give to Sam?

So, (38 - x) = 1/3 (20 + x)

       38 - x = 20/3 + 1/3 x

 

Lumping like terms together, 38 - 20/3 = 4/3 x

31 1/3 = 94/3 = 4/3 x => 4x = 94

∴ x = 94/4 = $23.50
