50-x = 3 (24 - x)

50-x = 72 - 3x

3x -x = 72 - 50

2x = 22

x = 11

There must be a typo in the question you've posted.

 

"respectively" means in the order mentioned. (Derek has 24$ ; John has 50$) They cannot spend the same amount of money and have Derek; with less money (24$) end up with three times as much money as the boy with 50$.
