The quadratic formula is (-b ± √(b2 - 4(a)(c)) / (2a))
The goal would be to recognize which numbers represent a, b, and c and then plug them into the quadratic formula.
Original equation. w^2 + 14w + 34 = 13
Step 1. Subtract 13 from both sides. w^2 + 14w + 21
Step 2. a = 1 b = 14 c = 21 (a=1 think of it as an invisible number in front of w^2)
Step 3. plug into quadratic formula. -14 ± √142 - 4 (1)(21) / 2 (1)
Step 4. simplify -14 ± (√196 - 84) / 2
Step 5. Solve (-14 ± 10.58) / 2
