let's say the final exam scores were
just 3 scores, 50, 80 and 100
mean score = arithmetic average = (50+80+100)/3 = 230/3 = 76 2/3
median = the middle score = 80
mean = sum of scores divided by the number of scores
median is the middle number, if there are an odd number. and it's the arithmetic average of the two middle numbers if there are an even number. for 50,80 and 100, 80 is the middle number = median
for 50, 70, 80 and 100, the median = (70+80)/2 = 75 = the average of the two middle numbers
