Differentiation of equation

Can you help me differentiate y=(4x^2+4)/5 and explain why you should not use the quotient rule for this?

Using an easier and simpler approach is not quite all that overkill and unnecessary.  Also, the simpler approach saves paper, and ensures minimal mathematical error.

If the student were to not use the quotient rule correctly, the derivative would not have been correct.  Here, you can manipulate it so you can use the popular power rule, which makes life easier.  As you get to higher levels of calculus, writing the function in another way is going to be the best thing for you.

Michael, I agree with you. You misunderstood what I said. I said it is a overkill to use quotient rule and I also agree with you that students will make a mistake if they use quotient rule. I was demonstrate its use so that one can see that it also produces the same result. Sorry, if my wording didn't come across properly.
