If gas prices are now $3.52 and they were up 22% from 6 months ago, how much were gas prices 6 months ago?

I'm having trouble using the correct formula.

Hi Frank.  

 

If x is the price of gas 6 months ago, then the price of gas now is 122% of that earlier price.  So,

 

122% of x is 3.52    which, as an equation, can be written as

 

1.22x = 3.52.

 

Simply divide 3.52 by 1.22 and you will have the earlier price.
