Substances may be classified as mixtures or compounds, in the case of the former falling into heterogenous or homogenous in composition, and in the latter, being subject to the idea of theoretical compounds where impurities in chemical structure are treated as negligible for the sample.
However, before experimental analysis, we don't know what definite make-up our substance has as long as it is not empty space.. we generally assume a substance is definite in the sense its composition is retrievable and verifiable. (Prior to experimentation)
