You have trouble with a most basic idea; this is evidence that you need to buckle down and pay more attention to your class lectures, and examples in the book.  'LIKE' terms are those having same spelling!  Thus in 5 + 6x + 3x3 + 4 + x + x2 + x3  we have
CONSTANT terms: 5+ 4
LINEAR TERMS (containing one x): 6x + x = 7x
QUADRATIC terms(containing x2, which is xx, a different 'spelling' from just x): x2 (no other term is LIKE this)
CUBIC terms(having x3, or x cubed, spelled xxx): 3x3 + x3 = 4x3
