If an athletic field is 240 yards what are its dimensions?

A athelet if field is twice as long as it is wide. If the perimeter of the athletic field is 240 yards what are its dimentions?

Let L be length, W be width.

 

Since it is twice as long as wide, then L=2*W

 

The perimeter is 240 = 2*L + 2*W

Since 2W=L, then 240 = 2*L + L = 3*L, or L=80 yards.  Then W=40 yards
